Daniel_Brockhurst | Marathon of Britain - Final Report
Firstly, huge apologies to all who were following the reports on raceblog and eventrate. The idea was for me to phone in my report and technology would enable you to hear it straight away. Technology worked well until the heavens opened and all the phones got soaked leaving me unable to phone in a report.
Fear not, I didn't disappear off the face of the Earth. I kept running through the sunshine, rain, hail, torrential soaking, and flash flooding to finish 17th alongside Victoria. We covered the entire 175 miles together which meant we were able to help each other through the low points. The biggest of these was on the long 54 mile stage.

Two updates this morning from Dan at around 10:15am
Been going since about 8:30 - so far done about 8 miles - ground's a bit soggy under foot.... but we're cathing the early people. There were 3 groups of people leaving today - the peopl at the back (who are wlaking or quite slow) left at 7:30am to give them more of a chance of getting in during daylight.. The bulk of us went at 8:30 and the people at the front - ie the top 15 - are leaving at 10:30..

Dan checks in at 6:46pm
Hiya - its absolutely howling with rain outside - thunder lightning and lukily we managed to get through most of the day before it really kicked in.. The rain stopped this morning just in time for the start of the stage - and it stayed off for most of the day.. except the last hour when we've come in in a torrential downpour thats just been really shocking!
The good news is that I actually made it in in just under 9 hours..Victoria and i actually came in just before half past five..

10:30am Dan checks in...
"We've just done the first 7.8 miles.. and we're at the bottom of hill number 1... fairly tired by now - which is a lovely sign for what's to come.. which is hill number 1 of 5 we've been told.. we can see the top of this one - which is good in some respects - and not very good in others..
Plodding along nice and slowly - so far 2:45 hours.. so we're keeping good pace and fairly near the back..I'm sure there's only about 10 people at most behind us..

7:44am Monday - Dan checks in..
29 miles to do today - I've been told it's 5 big hills - though looking at the map I only saw two of them... but the climbing is going to be tough today... not exactly looking forward to that - but strangely quite excited by it.
Had a better nights sleep last night..obviously the tiredness kicked in after our first stage.. managed to see the scoreboard and establish that I was 15th yesterday - which I was pretty pleased with. Andy came in - in the lead in 2hours 25 minutes - which is just far too fast really :-)

Dan checks in after the first stage..
Hello again, we've finally finished day one. A total of just over 16 miles by my navigation system. The good news is that we didn't get lost once..and it took about 3 and a half hours all in all.. Victoria and I came in together..
It was an absolute shocker of a first hill...it should definately be called a mountain - I think someone should rename the Malvern Hills the Malvern Mountain - as it sounds more impressive too... that was the first section from the start line - we were climbing that to checkpoint one which weemed to take forever - but then it was just along the ridge and hoping the navigation held out - which it did.

Dan checked in before the start...
'Good morning - it's coming up to 7:30am, August 1st - about to get out the briefing for day one this crazy event... 175 miles to go I think is the phrase. Not much sleep last night and gave up looking at the map around 10 o'clock just realising that I just need to get out onto the route and follow it as much as I can.. Victoria and I are go to try and work something out so we know where each other are at any given point in time..today I'll find out if I can follow it while I run..
Lot of laughter in the tent then - which takes my mind of the map reading that's about to come - which is good. There's a good mix in the tent - in fact Rob, Anke and Andy (who was last years winner). I don't know how I ended up in a tent with someone who could potentially win.

Dan reports in again.. (8pm Saturday)
Hello again - it's just coming up to 8 o'clock - dinners ' been had - very nice.... sausages and pasta - the cooks are doing a good job - not so hungry anymore. Had a chance to look at the roadmap for tomorrow - and it's preety much the same course that we went out on this time last year.
Starting to feel a little more nervous about it now..and that my navigation skills aren't that up to scratch.. everybody that knows what I went through last year with my navigation will be laughing at this point..and wishing me luck with my new found map reading skills.. This year I'm sure it will be fine - and I hope some of the course will still be in my mind and I'll remember little bits that we went through last year.
